“The Way We Shop: Is it Sustainable?” A probing question that spurred a flurry of arguments and opposing views from around 100 young students on Thursday 24 November.

“We’re here to build our team and trigger our creativity through serious play,” says the Director of United Nations Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC Beirut) Margo El-Helou at a retreat organized for the UN Communications Group in Lebanon (UNCG Lebanon) in her capacity as chair of this team.

In the run-up to Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 and as part of the global “Football for the Goals” initiative, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut produced a special episode of #TheUrbanAthletePodcast dedicated to this mega sporting event featuring football experts who gave insights about the tournament, shared professional experiences, and highlighted the role of SDGs in this game.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced on Tuesday, the 2022 Champions of the Earth for their transformative action to prevent, halt or reverse ecosystem degradation.  

A conservationist, a sustainable waste management enterprise, an economist, a women’s rights activist, and a wildlife biologist were selected from nearly 2,200 nominations – a new submission record. 

UNIC Beirut Director Margo El Helou kicked off her mission to Kuwait on Tuesday Nov. 8 by holding a one-to-one meeting with the Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator to the State of Kuwait Dr. Tarek El-Sheikh to tackle media-related issues and to brief him about the activities undertaken by the UN Communication Group (UNCG) and its performance in the country.

The Republic of Korea in Lebanon and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) signed today an agreement for US$ 500,000 to implement renewable energy solutions for facilities providing public services in Zahle. The signing ceremony was held at the Korean Embassy in Beirut and co-signed by the Korean Ambassador to Lebanon, H.E. Mr. Il Park, and Head of UN-Habitat Lebanon Country Programme, Taina Christiansen.

The first cholera outbreak in nearly three decades in Lebanon is now spreading throughout the country, with more than 1,400 suspected cases, and 17 reported deaths so far, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Tuesday.

The first case was reported to WHO by the Ministry of Public Health on 6 October, and there have been 381 laboratory-confirmed cases.

In response to the multiple crises Lebanon has been reeling under over the past few years, namely the 4 August 2020 Beirut Port explosion and the unprecedented financial and economic crisis, UN-Habitat in Lebanon has implemented multi-sectoral interventions to alleviate the impacts of crises, which have been threatening people’s safety, livelihoods, and connection to their urban surroundings.

The Secretary-General welcomes the signing of the agreement today to delineate the maritime boundary between Lebanon and Israel. As noted in our statement of 13 October, the Secretary-General strongly believes this development can promote increased stability in the region and enhanced prosperity for the Lebanese and Israeli peoples.
