UN Lebanon celebrates youth by encouraging them to combat hate speech and promote political participation

On the occasion of International Youth Day 2022, the United Nations in Lebanon urged youths to counter all forms of hate speech by promoting fact-checking and accurate information and encouraged them to advocate for a future that recognizes their political participation as a driving force for positive change.

The UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Beirut took the lead and produced a communication package for the UN Communications Group (UNCG) in Lebanon to mark this important day. The package included a human-centered multimedia story that highlights the role and responsibility of Lebanese youth in countering hate speech and misinformation. The story is based on a UNESCO project that involves young people and trainers and falls within one of the main objectives of UNCG Lebanon’s 2022 Communication Plan which is to position the UN’s content as a source of accurate and trusted information to help address misinformation, disinformation and break stereotypes.

The package also included social media messages spanning over a period of four days (from 11 to 14 August) on the global “Be Seen, Be Heard” campaign and which UNIC tailored to the Arab region and translated into Arabic. The global campaign, launched by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, mainly focuses on removing systemic barriers for young people to participate in public life, on amplifying their leadership in policy development, and on increasing their representation through the establishment and recognition of formal youth bodies.

On this day, UNIC Beirut also launched its TikTok account by producing a promo video that was widely shared by social media users. The Centre will be feeding its newly created account with interesting videos related to latest trends that are of relevance to the organization. Follow us.
