The United Nations Security Council has supported a US-proposed Israel-Gaza cease-fire plan. Out of the 15 Security Council members, 14 voted in favor of the U.S.-drafted resolution which calls for a three-phase cease-fire plan. Russia abstained.

What is the cease-fire proposal put forward by US President, Joe Biden?

- Phase 1: Six-week cease-fire and the first hostage-prisoner swap. Elderly, sick and women hostages would be swapped for Palestinian detainees held by Israel

- Phase 2: A” permanent end to hostilities," as well as a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

- Phase 3: Long-term reconstruction project for rebuilding the enclave that has been largely destroyed.
